Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was born in the year 570 (year of the Elephant) in Mecca after his father died.
After his mother passed away, Prophet Muhammad was raised by his uncle Abu Talib (from the tribes of Quraysh).
At the age of 12, He traveled with his uncle Abu Talib to Syria were he met a Christian monk by the name of Busra who told Abu Talib to return to Mecca with his nephew (Muhammad – PBUH) and guard him against the hatred of the Jews and that a career awaited him (Prophet Muhammad – SAAWS).
As he grew, Muhammad (SAAWS) became known as Al-Ameen because he was truthful, honest, generous, sincere and trustworthy even by the tribes of Quraysh.
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Wrote The Quran
Many believe, and still do to this day that Muhammad (SAAWS) wrote the Quran but how can he have written the Quran when he was illiterate, unable to read and write and remained so till the day he died.
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was conveying the same message of Tawhid (monotheism), the Oneness of God (Allah – SWT) to the tribes of Quraysh just as the previous Prophets did to their people. But the tribes of Quraysh didn’t like the message of Islam, so they started their persecution against the Prophet (SAAWS).
Their persecution of Prophet Muhammad (SAAWS) and of his small group became so fierce that in the year 266, Allah (SWT) gave him the command to migrate to Madina, about 260 miles to the North of Mecca, thus was the beginning of the Muslim Calendar called ‘Hijra‘, which means ‘Migration’ in Arabic
Muhammad (SAAWS) was very religious and he hated the idolatry of the Meccans and the tribes of Quraysh. The Quraysh detested him and the simple message for the Meccans (and others) to surrender their will (in body and soul) to the will of one Creator, one God, Allah (SWT).
First Revelation He (SAAWS) Received from God (Allah – SWT)
Prophet Muhammad used to seclude himself to a cave called ‘Hira‘ and meditate for hours and hours, and sometimes for days.
One night while meditating in the cave, he was visited by the Arch Angel Gibreel (Gabriel – PBUH). This was the first revelation he received which is to read (Iqra – in Arabic):
“Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists), Has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood).
Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, Who has taught (the writing) by the pen [the first person to write was Prophet Idrees (Enoch)], Has taught man that which he knew not. Nay! Verily, man does transgress all bounds (in disbelief and evil deed, etc.).
Because he considers himself self-sufficient. Surely! Unto your Lord is the return. Have you (O Muhammad) seen him (i.e. Abu Jahl) who prevents, A slave (Muhammad) when he prays? Tell me, if he (Muhammad) is on the guidance (of Allah)? Or enjoins piety? Tell me if he (the disbeliever, Abu Jahl) denies (the truth, i.e. this Qur’an), and turns away? Knows he not that Allah does see (what he does)? Nay! If he (Abu Jahl) ceases not, We will catch him by the forelock, A lying, sinful forelock! Then, let him call upon his council (of helpers), We will call the guards of Hell (to deal with him)! Nay! (O Muhammad)! Do not obey him (Abu Jahl). Fall prostrate and draw near to Allah!” – Surat 96, Al-Alaq (The Clot).
The revelations, collectively are known as the ‘Quran’ continued, through Arch Angel Gibreel (Gabriel – PBUH) for about twenty three years.
My thoughts about Prophet Muhammad being the Founder of Islam
I am about to comment about a statement I’ve read on various documents (online on in books) and heard on many videos related to our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). But before you criticize me, I want you to read and ponder on my comment.
The statement is that…
The Prophet Muhammad (SAAWS) was the founder of Islam
The statement, by some, that Prophet Muhammad (SAAWS) was the founder of Islam is a statement that I could never grasp nor come to accept because how can you be a founder of something that existed since the creation of Adam (PBUH).
