Ask any Muslim ‘Does Islam mean peace’, he/she will tell you Yes, without a doubt even though they never read about Islam nor met a Muslim.
Even if you ask a non-Muslim the same question, their answer might be the same as the Muslims’ or that Islam means war and terrorism.
And this will be because they heard it from someone who for some reason or another hate Islam (Islamophobia), or from a media outlet with an agenda against Islam.
Does the word ‘Islam’ really mean Peace? No!
The word ‘Islam’ in Arabic does not literally mean Peace!
The word ‘Islam’ is derived from the Arabic word ‘Aslama’, which literally mean ‘Surrender’ to the will of God, or to surrender to the commandments sent by God!
The Arabic word for ‘Peace’ is ‘Salam’ which shares the same consonant root S-L-M with the words Islam and Muslim.
When a Muslim meets someone (anyone irrespective of their faith), He or She will great them with ‘As-Salamou Alaikoum’, which means ‘Peace Be Upon You’.
So why Muslims say that ‘Islam means Peace’?
Are Muslims lying when they say that ‘Islam means Peace’? Let me answer this question by assuming that, you, the reader, are a Christian and truly follow the commandments of God (i.e.:
- Thou shalt have no other gods before me
- Honor thy father and thy mother
- Thou shalt not kill
- Thou shalt not commit adultery
- Thou shalt no steal
- Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor
and so on.
Do you believe if a higher percentage of people (from any country and belief) abide the above commandments, we’ll have peace on earth?…
If you don’t, I surely do
So does Islam mean peace?
In Islam, only by following the commandments of Allah that you will find peace! According to my understand of Islam, when following Allah’s commandments, you will enjoy the following:
Inner-peace – By submitting to the commands of the Creator and the Sustainer of this world, Allah (SWT) you will find peace!
Allah (SWT) says in the Holy Quran (verse 13, chapter 28):
“Truly, in remembering God do heats find rest.”
And in another verse, he talks about the ones who turn away from the Quran
“But whoever turns away from the Quran, he will have a hard life, and We will raise him up blind on the Day of Judgment.” (Quran verse 20, chapter 127).
Islam, a Religion of Peace!
Islam is not just a religion, it is a way of life! The way of life our creator prescribed to attain peace in this world, and in the hereafter! For example, when you purchase a new car, the manufacturer include a thick book with it, a user guide!
And in order to achieve optimal experience using your new car, you really need to read and understand the provided user guide.
But if you fail to do so, then you might be faced with poor car performance (we are not talking about speed here), and many visits to a car mechanic!
The Quran is everyone’s guide to achieving happiness in this life (short life) and a guide to obtaining the greatest reward in the hereafter (permanent life)!
Armed with the Quran and the authentic teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH – Peace Be Upon Him), plus the Mercy and Blessing of Allah (SWT), you shall attain happiness in worship, work, society, economics, family, and so on!
Allah (SWT) says in the Holy Quran (16:97):
“Whoever works righteousness – whether male or female – while he (or she) is a true believer verily, to him We will give a good life (in this world with respect, contentment and lawful provision), and We shall pay them certainly a reward in proportion to the best of what they used to do (i.e. Paradise in the Hereafter).”.
Islam, the path to Happiness!
In Islam, you attain the state of happiness (contentment and peacefulness, the joy that causes us to smile, and make our heart happy) only by having faith in the One Creator, our God Allah (SWT) and the complete obedience to Him.
One thing to always remember (and this is very important), is that even if you…
- Perform your daily prayers
- Give charity
- Feed the hungry
- Help the needy
- and Clothe the naked
Allah might still afflict you with hardship, and when he does (Allah – SWT), remember that this is just a test for the believers!
Always remember that there may be great sorrow and within the pain and despair, there may be great joy!
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said,
“If he is granted ease (The Believer) then he is thankful, and this is good for him.And if he is afflicted with a hardship, he perseveres, and this is good for him.”
Islam, answer to all Mankind’s problems
Islam talks about all the problems that might afflict everyone of us and gives us the tools to over come every affliction!
The Quran and the teaching of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) give you everything you need to know about how to deal with everyday problems, be is social issues, economic issues, poverty problems, health problems, and so on!
These tools will help us see beyond the need for material things such as having the nicest and the most expensive car or the biggest house!
What does Islam Teach?
Islam teaches us not to focus on this material world and acquiring everything there is to acquire on this earth but instead, it teaches us that this life is a short life, this life is just a test.
And depending on what happiness really mean to you, you might be following the path to your own destruction, or the path to making your heart happy with what Allah (SWT) provided you with, and look forward to something far better in the hereafter!
As in other Abrahamic religions such as Judaism and Christianity, ‘Salam’ , or Peace is a concept of Islamic thoughts and belief.
